Common Questions
Can you supply a casket or urn on short notice? Although I cannot guarantee availability of particular models, I almost always have several completed caskets and urns on hand for immediate use. What kinds of materials do you use? I seek to use materials and techniques that ensure a pleasant-looking, strong and environmentally sound product. At present I build with veneered plywoods or solid pine and spruce. The former are sturdy, relatively inexpensive and allow for the enjoyment of woodgrains without consuming precious solid lumber. The latter is a fast-growing softwood. Interior beds and pillows are made of organic cotton filled with shredded wood fibre and can be used as they are or personalized with blankets. On finished caskets, I use non-toxic finishes. Will funeral homes agree to use a casket they did not supply? In Canada, as in the US, the law requires funeral homes to accept a
casket brought in by the customer. And there are many precedents: in
Winnipeg there is at least one retail outlet selling caskets for use
in any funeral home. Stories abound of people who build their own caskets.
Will the funeral home charge us more for other services or products if we do not buy a casket from them? Funeral homes must list separately the price of each item or service they offer. This provides the customer with some protection against inflated prices for other services or products if a casket is not purchased. Again, the good reputation of the funeral home is at stake. Do you offer storage of caskets purchased for future use? No, I do not offer this service. I do, however, welcome people to have a casket built in advance and find their own place for safe storage. Will your caskets fit into standard vaults or concrete liners? Yes. Most caskets vary slightly in size but, unless asked to do otherwise, I build well within the dimensions commonly used.
